Queer personal ads + LGBTQ+ persecution - a story from the archives

Challenge

  • As part of the 2019 Being Human Festival the National Archives put on a series of events exploring LGBTQ+ history.

  • One of the stories was about an early 20th Century publication called The Link that featured queer personal ads and the subsequent prosecution and imprisonment of its editor.

  • A performance based on the ads took place at the Vauxhall Tavern in London.

How we helped

  • We produced a short film featuring footage from the performance, alongside interviews with the event’s organiser and the drag performer, Timbelina.
