The role

Are you a strong communicator with creative flair and an eye for detail? Would you like to use your skills to create a positive impact in the world, by taking on a key role at a small but fast-growing, mission-driven company?

At Orinoco Communications we are looking for somebody to join our team who can help us deliver strategy, videos, animations, and other digital content for our clients from the research and innovation sectors.

As Junior Content Producer you will get to hone your skills as a writer, and develop expertise as a multimedia content creator, including video and audio editing, as well as using design software like Adobe Photoshop.

At the same time you will also be expected to take on a variety of production support tasks, which will help you to gain a rapid understanding of everything involved with the planning and execution of video productions and communications campaigns, from the creative inputs to the logistical requirements.

At Orinoco we adopt a ‘free range’ approach to work, with team members located across the U.K., so you would be able to work from wherever you like.  But we also value the importance of in-person interaction for company culture and team building, so we meet up together at least once a quarter.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Creating multimedia content - you will help write video scripts and blog posts, assist with our Research Comms podcast, and provide support with video editing tasks

  • Helping us ensure that internal and external projects run smoothly - you’ll work with our Project Manager to monitor scheduling, set up new projects, data management, and budget support

  • Coordinating production - you will be in charge of logistical tasks, including creating call sheets and risk assessments, securing permissions, booking travel and whatever else is needed to ensure that filming days go off without a hitch

  • Attending shoots - you will attend and assist on video shoots around the UK

  • Social media - you will spot new opportunities for engagement on our social media channels, help come up with content ideas, create content, post it and interact with our community.

  • Research - we’re a curious bunch and always hunting for new information about a variety of topics, so a chunk of your time is likely to be spent digging into research about whatever’s captured our attention!

You’ll do well in this role if you have these strengths

  • Strongly attentive to detail - you will have responsibility for the smooth and safe running of projects and shoots, so being precise and thorough in your work is essential

  • Hungry to learn. You will have huge opportunities to develop new skills in this role and the hungrier you are the more you’ll get out of it

  • Broadly curious - we want candidates who are interested in a wide variety of subjects, across different areas of research and whose natural curiosity makes them dig beyond the surface level to uncover the most effective ways of doing things

  • Comfortable working as part of a small team on a range of tasks, both creative and administrative

  • Proactive and positive - focused on finding solutions to challenges for the team and for our clients.

Knowledge and skills required

  • Essential: Excellent communication skills - evidenced by examples of written work on factual topics

  • Essential: Excellent written English

  • Desired but not essential: experience creating multimedia content - especially video editing experience

  • Desired but not essential: Bachelors or higher degree in a STEM subject

Residency requirements

You must have the right to live and work in the UK and be considered resident in the UK to take up this role.

A bit about us…

We are a specialist digital communications and content creation agency (mostly videos and animations), based in the UK and USA, working exclusively in the research and innovation sector.

Our goal is to ensure that the best research has the impact it deserves by helping clients from the worlds of science, the social sciences and humanities to tell their stories and shine a light on the latest discoveries.

That means that our projects are incredibly varied, covering everything from medical research, future energy and biotech to net zero, political philosophy and economics.

It’s always interesting, it’s always new, and its purpose is always to help the best ideas have a positive impact in the world.

We are a small, friendly team and we’re excited about taking this next step to welcome a new member on board.

If that person sounds like you then please take a moment to apply!

How to apply

To apply, please send an outline of your experience and skills no longer than two pages, along with a short covering letter (no more than 200 words) about why you want to join us. Please also send any examples of written work and links to any multimedia projects that you have been involved with.

N.B. You must have the right to live and work in the UK and be considered resident in the UK for tax purposes to take up this role.

Deadline for applications: 31st March 2023

Next Steps

Once all applications are in we will invite some candidates for an initial (30 - 60 min) conversation with us, either in-person or via video call.

This will give us a chance to learn more about your experience and how you work, and for you to find out more about us.

A second interview will be offered to two or three of the candidates who we think would be the best fit for the role.

If we are still undecided after these conversations, we may follow up with an invitation to complete a (paid) task to assess how you’d approach an activity that’s likely to be a regular part of the role.

We will make decisions and inform candidates within a week of seeing all the people we invited for each particular round of activities.

We will do our best to respond personally to all initial applications but we are a small company, so that might not be possible if the volume of responses is high.

Any questions?

We hope this covers all the important stuff but if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch, we’d be very happy to chat about the role!
